The Swedish Energy Agency, Formas and Vinnova are together announcing 34 million kronor in funding for Swedish participation in the call for international cooperation ERA-NET Cofund Urban Accessibility and Connectivity (ENUAC). ENUAC invites researchers, cities, municipalities, businesses, civil society and other stakeholders to apply for grants to build transnational consortia that address how urban accessibility and connectivity solutions can promote a more sustainable urban development. Sixteen European countries are participating in the call, which has a total budget of approximately 22.5 million euros.

The Swedish Energy Agency is coordinator for the call, and a complete Swedish call text will be published shortly on the agency’s website. Although the Swedish Energy Agency is a coordinating party for the call, project proposals that would traditionally belong to Formas or Vinnova are of course as welcome as those with a more natural connection to the Swedish Energy Agency’s areas of responsibility.

The call applies a two-step process, in which the first step involves the submission of an outline and the second step is for complete applications

  1. The outlines are due on 17 March 2020 at 13.00 pm.
  2. Complete applications are due 20 September 2020, 13.00 pm.

Please consult the international call text External link. about the details of the two-step process. Both outlines and complete applications are submitted through the electronic application system of the Agence Nationale de la Recherché (ANR) External link..

Sustainable urban accessibility and connectivity meet the basic mobility needs of individuals and businesses in cities in a way that is safe, reliable and consistent with human health and ecosystems. Furthermore, sustainable urban accessibility and connectivity take into account aspects of fairness between different groups in society as well as between modern-day and future generations.

In light of this, ENUAC invites researchers and other interested applicants to address existing urban accessibility and connectivity challenges and to propose projects whose results lead to new approaches, tools, instruments, insights and knowledge needed for cities to become more climate-neutral and sustainable.

More precisely, the call focuses on five challenges in sustainable urban accessibility and connectivity:

  1. Develop solutions for an integrated approach to sustainable physical mobility and transport, including land use and digital connectivity.
  2. Develop and support the implementation of innovative mobility systems and services that can contribute to sustainable urban mobility.
  3. Transform and reorganise urban spaces to pave the way for sustainable urban mobility and accessibility at the local level (from the street scale to the district).
  4. Develop effective policy options for achieving increased sustainable accessibility and connectivity in cities.
  5. Change behaviours and perspectives towards increased sustainable accessibility and connectivity in cities.

Stakeholders operating in Sweden who can make a contribution to international research and innovation projects in the fields of the call are welcome to apply. They can include: research and innovation practitioners from higher education institutions (all social science, humanist, technical and scientific disciplines), research institutes, businesses, the public sector (cities, municipalities, etc.) and civil society.

  • Each project must involve at least three independent and approved project partners from at least three of the countries participating in the call.
  • All projects must involve stakeholders and describe the outcome of their participation.
  • Projects are expected to have an interdisciplinary, co-creative approach.
