Sustainability at Formas
Formas contributes to sustainable development in many ways, by funding research and innovation and through our other assignments. Our work is based on the vision “Knowledge builds a sustainable world”, and we strive to practice what we preach within our organisation.
The environment at the core of what we do
The main priority of our sustainability efforts is to reduce the environmental impact of our operations. We follow the requirements stipulated in the environmental management requirements for government agencies and travel-free meetings (REEM). At the same time, we strive to be an attractive and responsible employer. We are also committed to integrating the 2030 Agenda across our operations in various ways to more methodically do our part to achieve the UN’s sustainable development goals.
Environmental policy and goals at Formas
Formas’ current environmental management system was developed in 2016. Our environmental policy and a summary of our environmental goals are described below.
Formas’ environmental policy aims to contribute to sustainable development and to achieve Sweden’s national environmental quality objectives. To accomplish this, employees at Formas take into account and minimise their negative impacts on the environment. We put special emphasis on our most significant negative environmental impact, emissions from air travel. Formas employees must have a good understanding of our environmental management system and promote the positive impact on the environment generated by Formas’ areas of activity.
- Increase the number of travel-free meetings to minimise emissions
- Have procedures in place for all organisational units that have a negative environmental impact
- Procure goods and services using environmental requirements
- Monitor and reduce energy consumption
- Follow up on our purchases of consumables to reduce consumption and increase recycling.
We have taken several actions to meet these environmental goals. Among them, we have introduced a policy for meetings and travel and made various efforts to support travel-free work methods. We have also included environmental considerations in procurement guidelines and established complete waste sorting and a more circular management of discarded IT equipment. A full account of these actions can be found in our report to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. The input for this is part of the annual compilation of government agencies’ environmental management efforts.
We will soon update Formas’ environmental management system based on a new environmental assessment that has identified where our operations have the greatest direct and indirect impacts.
We welcome comments and ideas about Formas’ sustainability work.
