Formas' organisation

The Swedish Research Council Formas is a research council and government agency with approximately 100 employees. The operations are led by the Director General, who, together with the heads of department, forms Formas’ management group.

Management Group

The management group consists of the Director General and the heads of the four departments: Agriculture, Food and Forest; Urban and Rural Development, Climate and Natural Environment, and Governance and Support. The management team addresses strategic issues such as overall operational priorities, budget, operational plans, skill needs, and resource allocation.

Formas’ Departments

Three thematic departments are responsible for Formas’s main remit of funding research and innovation within our three subject areas, and for compiling results from published research:

• The Department for Agriculture, Food and Forest, comprising the Unit for Forest and Bioeconomy and the Unit for Food and Agriculture
• The Division for Urban and Rural Development, comprising the Unit for Housing and Built Environment and the Unit for Spatial Planning and Infrastructure
• The Division of Climate and Natural Environment, comprising the Unit for Climate Transformation and the Unit for Resilient Ecosystems.

In addition, there is:

• The Department for Governance and Support, comprising Management Support, the Unit for Systems and Internal Support, and the Unit for Finance and Legal.

The Department for Agriculture, Food and Forest

This department brings together Formas’ work in agriculture, forestry, food, bioeconomy and other land-based industries. The department acts in all three roles identified in Formas’ strategy: expert, collaboration partner and funder.

The Department for Urban and Rural Development

This department brings together Formas’ work on developing knowledge that strengthens society’s resilience, security and long-term sustainability. The department acts in all three roles identified in Formas’ strategy: expert, collaboration partner and funder.

The Department for Climate and Natural Environment

This department brings together Formas’ work on strengthening knowledge and innovation to tackle the climate challenge and safeguard biodiversity. The department acts in all three roles identified in Formas’ strategy: expert, collaboration partner and funder.

The Department for Governance and Support

The department is responsible for supporting the thematic divisions in their roles as experts, collaboration partners and funders, as well as providing support to the Director General for the governance of Formas as a government agency.
