To increase our understanding of the social and cultural dimensions of climate change and the loss of biodiversity, we are now preparing a call for research in this area. The call is part of the national research programme on climate.

We are facing a twofold environmental crisis: continuing climate change and an ongoing depletion of biodiversity. These crises are closely interrelated and mutually reinforcing, and they affect the habitats of humans, other species and entire ecosystems. Yet although the crises are interrelated, they do not necessarily require the same solutions. Some measures can be taken to fight both climate change and biodiversity loss, but efforts to solve one problem can also exacerbate the other. Both the crises themselves and measures to address them have different consequences for different groups of people and for entire communities in various parts of the world.

The purpose of this call is to increase knowledge, from a social and cultural perspective, about the link between climate change and biodiversity loss and their consequences. Themes that can be explored include how these simultaneous crises are interpreted and managed at different levels of society and the world, and how different solutions are designed, received or opposed by different individuals, groups or organisations – either by those directly affected by the crises in their daily lives or those who are farther removed from such immediate consequences.

The call is aimed at researchers who are affiliated with a Swedish higher education institution, research institute, or government agency that has a research assignment. Interdisciplinary collaborations are encouraged but are not a requirement.
