Syntheses and research projects for a sustainable spatial planning

Decided. In this call, researchers at universities and research institutes can apply for funding. The call consists of two parts, where the first focuses on syntheses and the second focuses on research projects.

Part 1: Syntheses of knowledge status and knowledge gaps

What do we know today and what do we need to find out in order to create sustainable communities? Formas seeks syntheses that describe established knowledge and knowledge gaps within areas that are relevant for a sustainable spatial planning, supported by research from several scientific disciplines. Formas welcomes applications from all scientific disciplines: humanities, natural sciences, social science, medicine and technology. In the evaluation of the syntheses, the method will be particularly scrutinized.

Who can apply: The main applicant should be a researcher that holds a Ph.D. and be currently employed at a university or a research institute. Other stakeholders can participate, but there are no requirements of co-funding.
Each project can apply for: 1–1.5 million SEK/year.
Length of project: 1 year.
Formas allocates: Up to 16,5 million SEK.

Part 2: Research projects focussing on the citizens or actors involved

Formas invites researchers from all disciplines to design research projects that focuses on citizens and stakeholders in sustainable spatial planning. The projects should combine at least two scientific areas, either within the same scientific discipline, such as social science, or across scientific disciplines, such as social science and technology. Formas welcomes applications from all scientific disciplines: humanities, natural sciences, social science, medicine and technology.

Who can apply: The main applicant should be a researcher that holds a Ph.D. and be currently employed at a university or a research institute. Other stakeholders can participate, but there are no requirements of co-funding.
Each project can apply for: 1–3 million SEK/year.
Length of project: 3 years.
Formas allocates: Up to 85 million SEK.

National Research Programme for Sustainable Spatial Planning

This call is the second call within the national research programme within sustainable spatial planning. The first call was about social housing policy. The national research programme within sustainable spatial planning must generate knowledge that provides the possibilities to develop new solutions within all sectors of society in order to create a safe, secure, sustainable and inclusive society. Sweden and the world currently faces decisive social challenges that we must recognise and manage to be able to continue to build a modern and sustainable welfare state.
