Decided. The tourism and hospitality industry in Sweden has a large turnover, it employs many people and the industry is expected to continue to grow. It involves many regions and actors in our society, and plays an important role for example for local communities, for employment and for the environment. This industry thus has considerable possibilities to contribute to a more sustainable economic, social and environmental development in large parts of the country, both in urban and rural environments.
The official given decision will at the latest be announced in Prisma on 23 November.
However, more knowledge is needed, in order to ensure that the industry can develop in a sustainable fashion, contributing to the achievement of the Agenda 2030 and the national environmental goals, and to avoid potential conflicts of interest. Existing research on sustainable tourism is fragmented.
Formas therefore allocates 60 million SEK to contribute to developing and strengthening research in the field. In addition to the researchers already in the field, the call also aims at attracting researchers outside already established research environments within the tourism and hospitality industry, and encourage them to bring their research questions, theories and methods to bear on a strategic and innovative development of the research field. In order to identify branch-specific challenges, to make the results of research accessible and to be as inclusive as possible, the research projects are recommended to include industry representatives, authorities, regions, municipalities and the civil society.
The call will close August 21, 2018. Decision on which projects to fund will be taken on November 14, 2018 (preliminary dates).
