This call aims to establish a national, integrated, and decision-relevant system for water budgets and water accounting in Sweden. The goal is to improve knowledge of water availability, water quality, and actual water use in surface water and groundwater—including withdrawals, returns, and net consumption—at the watershed level.
This call is being conducted under the Water Wise Societies program, which is part of Impact Innovation—an initiative in which the Swedish Energy Agency, Formas, and Vinnova bring together stakeholders to address major societal challenges through innovation and collaboration. Funded projects will work closely with the Water Wise Societies program office and play a central role in fulfilling the program’s mission. Two projects will be funded.
Although Sweden generally has good hydrological data on precipitation, runoff, and water storage, there is currently no integrated national approach to quantifying how much water of what quality is actually abstracted, returned, and consumed across different sectors, geographic areas, and seasons. This call for proposals aims to establish a national, coherent, and decision-relevant system for water budgets and water accounting in Sweden by developing a national methodology and platform for water balances in Sweden.
Projects funded under this call must include four components: 1) the development of a methodological platform; 2) data infrastructure, IT, and security; 3) governance, roles, and responsibilities; and 4) risks, costs, and consequences of action and inaction.
This call for proposals is intended to contribute to achieving Water Wise Societies’ overarching mission, “Sustainable Water for All by 2050.” Funded projects will collaborate regularly with the Water Wise Societies program office.
The call for proposals is open to a wide range of stakeholders: academia, the public sector, the business community, and civil society organizations. A consortium may consist of a minimum of two and a maximum of five partners. The coordinating partner must be from academia, and a public sector stakeholder must be included in the consortium.
