
Like many other amphibians, the great crested newt has become less common during the past few decades. A thesis from Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences SLU describes what characterises the environments where the newt is still found. Warm ponds with species-rich vegetation, but without fishes and crustaceans, surrounded by deciduous trees and grassland, were found to be especially valuable. The Minister for the Environment, Lena Ek, visited Formas on Wednesday the 7th of March. The purpose of the visit was to inform the relatively new Minister of Formas' activities, and to meet with Formas employees. The conversations focused on the needs for new knowledge, that is to say research needs. We also talked about how we can assure that research results will be useful in society.

2012-01-16: Last year filmmaker Folke Rydén made his film Livsviktigt (Vital). The film demonstrated the importance of R&D and innovation and was funded by the Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research, the Swedish Research Council Formas, the Swedish Research Council and VINNOVA.
